Press Release (ENG)
Taichung Art Museum(TcAM) announced Haegue Yang as the first artist for the biennial commission project, TcAM Art Commission, opening this December. Yang’s large-scale installation piece, Liquid Votive – Tree Shade Triad (2025) is her first commissioned work in Taiwan.
Taichung Green Museumbrary, an integrated complex of the museum and the Municipal Library, has drawn attention for its design by SANAA, the globally renowned Japanese architecture firm. Inviting Yang for the ambitious site-specific work is expected to draw international attention by emphasizing the building’s visual and functional aspect. Liquid Votive, will highlight the inaugural project, resonating institutional identity and its surrounding ecological, cultural dynamics.
Liquid Votive will be installed at the monumental 27-meter-high void lobby space that links the galleries with the library. Consist with Yang’s iconic Venetian blind, Liquid Votive guides the audience to view along the spiral ramp. The work takes inspiration from sacred giant trees across various cultures around the world, in which they served as communal sites for spiritual bonds beyond physical gatherings. In particular, based on her field research in Taichung, the work embodies the cultural symbolism of the sacred tree, dashugong from Taiwan, as the concept of communal guidance and spiritual leadership, such as dangsan namu from Korea.
